(TEACHER'S REFERENCE MATERIALS)

Examples of criteria for word-attack

-word formation (e.g. prefixes = a key to meaning; suffixes = a key to grammatical class and meaning)

-category (superordinates and hyponyms, e.g. vehicle/car)

-contrast (alternative terms, e.g. academic/vocational)

-definition/near-synonym

-cognates, borrowings, "international" words

-grammatical information: morphological (word classes), syntactical (word functions, word position)

-linguistic context (co-text)

-non-linguistic context: world knowledge: - general; - culture-specific; - topic-specific

Example of criteria for text-attack

- lexical, e.g. repetition, contrast, general words, hyponyms, (near-) synonyms, lexical sets

- grammatical, e.g. logical connectors (expressing addition,  contrast, cause, etc.), reference (e.g. demonstratives, numeratives, comparatives, etc.)

-coherence: e.g.

- order of presentation/enumeration

- contrast/comparison

- statement and example/illustration/expansion

- arguments/counter-arguments

- statement of problem/data analysis/opinions/summary and conclusions
